Best Apple Crisp Recipe | Paleo Apple Crisp

Why do I call this my best apple crisp recipe

  • It tastes absolutely delicious.
  • It contains a few superfood products: coconut oil, flaked coconut, and coconut flour.
  • It is gluten free. But the taste and texture are first rate. Did I mention it is delicious?

Here's the best paleo apple crisp recipe if you need to eat nut free. It has no refined sugar--the coconut flour topping is sweetened with honey. It's a simple, easy, healthy treat.

  • It is dairy free.
  • It is refined-sugar free. It uses honey instead, another wonderful superfood.
  • It fits the Paleo Diet.
  • It is legal on SCD
  • It fits the Primal Diet.
  • It is legal on the Full GAPS Diet.
  • It makes your house smell just like a conventional apple crisp recipe while it is baking...

When we first went gluten free, I felt kind of sad that I had to put aside a lot of my favorite old stand-by recipes. Then, we went on the GAPS Diet, and even more recipes went out the window. But now, I have realized that some of my old favorites can be converted, or shall we say, “upgraded,” to use healthier, better quality ingredients that still taste amazing.

Like my apple cranberry crumble (aka cranberry apple crisp) this is a make-over of a popular Pampered Chef recipe called "Easy Apple Crisp."

(And both would taste delicious with this wonderful herbal coffee recipe.)

It's a GAPS Apple Crisp

I know, I just mentioned that in the list above. But when you're on a diet like the GAPS Diet, any foods that remind you of your old favorites are more than welcome!

Please do keep in mind that this is appropriate for the final stage of GAPS, the Full GAPS diet. If you're in an earlier stage, you perhaps might enjoy something more simple, like apple slices sauteed in ghee or butter.

When I created this recipe while on GAPS, the fact that I could eat something like this is what prompted me to name this "best apple crisp recipe."

Also a Paleo Apple Crisp!

Yes, because it is both grain free and dairy free, this fits perfectly on the Paleo diet.

It's also an SCD Apple Crisp

The SCD or Specific Carbohydrate Diet has a food list similar to, but not exactly the same as the GAPS Diet and Paleo Diet.

My Best Tip!

I strongly urge you to slice the apples thinly and evenly, and use a stoneware deep dish baker for baking this recipe (stoneware promotes even baking). If you have an apple peeler corer slicer, the tool featured in the video below, making even slices will be a quick and simple task.

Otherwise, get out a good sharp paring knife and slice away. This is one of the main reasons I call this my best apple crisp recipe.

Here's my secret to a moist, evenly-baked filling. The apple peeler-corer-slicer. This is a must for my best apple crisp recipe.

For Added Moisture...

Baked goods with coconut flour can sometimes turn out a little dry. If I did not have a son with a dangerous nut allergy, I probably would've made the topping of this as a blend of nut flour and coconut flour.

Despite this, I like the way the crumb topping as it is.

But if you want a super-moist apple crisp, you may want to have some sweetened coconut milk or favorite milk or cream that you are able to tolerate, to pour over the top of the crisp when served.

Best Paleo Apple Crisp Recipe

Why is this the best apple crisp recipe, in my opinion? Well, it tastes amazing. But that is not all. It is gluten free, grain free, dairy free, and refined sugar free. Sweetened with honey!

Prep Time: 20 minutes
Cook time: 45 minutes
Keywords: apple crisp, easy apple crisp, paleo apple crisp
Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients

  • 5 Granny Smith apples
  • 1/2 cup coconut oil, melted (I get Nutiva brand from my local Costco. If that won't work for you, you can also find coconut oil here)
  • 1 cup chopped nuts (optional)
  • 1 cup coconut flour
  • 1 cup unsweetened shredded coconut
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2-3 Tablespoons honey (or more to taste, perhaps mix the topping without the eggs, sweeten to taste, and add the eggs last and mix well).
  • 3/4 teaspoon unrefined salt (I like to use this salt)
  • 2 Tablespoons cinnamon
  • (optional) full fat coconut milk, sweetened to taste with honey (optional as a topping)
  • Instructions

    1. Preheat oven to 350 F. Peel, core and slice apples. I used an apple peeler corer slicer, to get the slices thin and even (which is key for having evenly baked apple slices, see the video, below, for a demonstration).  Once you have peeled, cored and sliced each apple, you will have one long spiral of apple in the shape of a sphere. Cut each apple spiral in half with a utility knife to create lots of little wedges. Place apples in an 11 inch stoneware deep dish baker.

    2. Warm coconut oil in a pan, if not already melted. Chop nuts, if using them. I like to use my food chopper to chop nuts quickly. Add nuts, coconut oil, coconut flour, flaked coconut, honey, salt & cinnamon into a large bowl. Mix well, and taste if desired. Adjust honey to taste. Then add eggs, and mix till it all gets crumbly. Sprinkle mixture evenly over apples. Be sure to cover apples completely, to seal in the juices and keep the apple slices moist!

    3. Bake 35-45 minutes or till apples are tender and crumbs are golden brown.

Serve warm, with optional whipped coconut cream, homemade ice cream, or just pour some sweetened, full fat coconut milk or cream over top. Yum!
